The bottom line is, allowing non-subscribers to post (moderated or not)
just creates never-ending confusion - as evidence in support, see the
never-ending comments about it on the OOo lists where someone is
*constantly* being told that their response didn't go to the OP because
they OP wasn't subscribed, etc etc etc ad nauseum.

Actually, the way I see it, and I am also subscribed to the OOo list, the complaints are that the subscribed users could not answer back to the non-subscribed users. This is the resounding complaint on the list. We are not complaining of the posts from the non-subscribers, but of the inability to help them. There has to be a better way to help these users.

Actually, I am not sure where to find it, I believe at one point, on one of the discussion lists, that one of our communities (could be the German OOo) said that they have never had a close group and they have had very minimal disturbances on these forums. They offer help to anyone without any conditions. Their forums are open for everyone.

After all, they are using our suite that we developed as a community and we also promote its use and try to market to different groups. Why would we market to new users only to make it difficult for them to get help? Let's complete the marketing and promotional cycle in proving that we do want to provide everyone with an awesome suite and help them out.
