sorry, to finish that sentence:

It might be possible to first establish a Santander account in Germany and from there set up a U.S. account -- Santander International has a branch in Manhattan

... and in that case, perhaps inquiring at my local Sovereign bank would just be adding another unnecessary layer of complexity.

Let me know if there's anything I can do locally in NYC.
