the other Debian-based distros are too large a part of the market to stick
with an RPM>DEB conversion before installation.

There is are DEB packages already http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/testing/ . As stated yesterday I do not now why they are not linked in unless they are not done testing them.
