Is it possible to write the version number in a way that is understandable by mere mortals?

For example, current version of LibreOffice is called 3.3.0beta2 on the website. Yet, when I open "About LibreOffice", I see LibreOffice3.3.0 -- OOO330m9 (Build:1) libreoffice-build 3.2.99.2.

Nothing tells me whether I have the final version, a preliminary version, a nightly build or...

I know I am able to find the proper information, but think about my mother, or think about me, when I want to update my colleagues' computers and can't easily see what version they have.
