I am in the UK too.
Perhaps I should have mentioned, I am using an iMac System 10.6.6
Shift 3 = £
Shift 4 = $
Alt    2 = €

The € is universal now and you should not need to use things like macro's

On the standard 105-key Scandinavian keyboard, the symbol «€» is most easily
typed via «Alt Gr + e». Doesn't this procedure work on English-language
keyboards ?...
