Are you using KDE or Gnome?

KDE 4.4.4 on opensuse 11.3
That may be the problem, KDE uses KIO for browsing network files, and
I am not sure libreoffice properly supports it. Someone who knows
more can probably say with more certainty.

You're right Todd: the only way to open a remote file on KDE is to
mount the network share locally. If you need to reach a file via ssh
you can try sshfs
