As you all know the floppy disc is some thing out dated in the modern
computer world.

Why we still continue the "Floppy Disk" as the icon for "Save" button in
LibreOffice?

When was the last time you saw a phone that look like

:-)
Ironically that 70 years old design is still used on IPhone and others
modern cell-phone to indicate: 'telephone'

But hey, if you have a better icon, that will be as readily understood
by users as meaning 'save'... sure, why not :-)
I did a quick Google picture search with 'save icon', and I ended-up
with 1001-variations on the floppy theme :-)

Hehe, well, thinking of it, digital cameras mimic the mechanical sounds.
Still, anyone with an idea and access to a reference group should be able
to check whether this is feasible or not.

The Tango icon-set has something called "DocumentSave" <http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Document-save.svg>, this is probably better understood than a floppy by people that have never seen one.

I've seen a couple of apps using a modified Tango icon; the harddisk <http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Drive-harddisk.svg> with a green downwards pointing arrow.

Unfortunately it looks quite similar to the "Download" icon used at least in the default Firefox theme.

I think Oliver has a point; a change could be problematic - and is not only concerning the visual metaphor, there's semantics too (what's a "Save"?, why don't we "Write to disk" or "Stock on disk" or whatever...)
