Here's my appraisal as an observer of the Apache discussions:
There are two "deals" one of which is done, one of which isn't (yet).
It is a done deal that Oracle has made a grant to the Apache Software Foundation.
There is a proposal at the ASF to create an incubator podling (a fledgling project). That is, to
accept the grant and proceed to bring the OpenOffice.org code and maintain/develop it with Apache
License version 2 open-source software.
The only question (at Apache) is whether they will or will not create an incubator. That's the
second deal.
We will likely know whether Apache has initiated an incubator by this time next week, probably
sooner.
To repeat, the grant has been made, and it gives Apache an Apache License to what of OpenOffice.org
that Oracle has the right to license. The actual list of artifacts will probably have to be
adjusted as the original list is reviewed and questions asked. Oracle has indicated that it is
willing to cooperate in that and ensure a successful transfer of the materials.

Hi Jim,

The reality is that IBM employees wearing their IBM hats, have made
it
crystal clear on the general@incubator list that IBM is going to
force The Apache Foundation to take the project.
How?
I am *not* saying you would be influenced or forced - I'd never doubt that you are deciding
independent. However, what people may give the feeling that something's wrong are statements like
these:

"it is a done deal"
That might create wrong impressions...
