David, you refer to references to the page. I think one of the
advantages of a wiki page is, that the content might change
quickly/easily ... and so does (might) the numbering. It is more a
"living" document. I think this is the reason for omitting the
heading numbers (in the default setting).
For quicker referencing a current topic it's fine to have autonumbering
ON. Sometimes on longer pages there are several headings sounding very
similar so referencing them by number clarifies unambigously which
section is referred to. That might be wrong tomorrow, but nevertheless
cleares things today ;-)
